The Commons, Assemblies and Horizontalidad (or Horizontalism) are three radical concepts of self- and collective-empowerment. Yet each of these three words have taken on lives of their own, and to some extent been appropriated by capitalist society в?? including government agencies, commercial enterprises and authoritarian groupings. Rather than argue against how these concepts are being misappropriated, we will explore their roots, anti-capitalist intentions and their focus on social relations. We will examine specific examples of their practice and how they can be used in movement в?? by societies in movement в?? toward a more wholistic concept of liberation. Examples in our discussion will range from Argentina, Bolivia and Rojava to Occupy and movements in defense of the earth, water and air.
