Kwame Fosu is Human Rights Defender and the Director of Policy and Legal Affairs for the Rebecca Project for Justice. Fosu, a John Jay College alumnus, received his Juris Doctorate from Georgetown University Law Center.
At the Left Forum, Kwame Fosu and panelists will discuss his three year battle with agents and intermediaries of corporate giants: Pfizer (maker of Depo Provera), PPFA (largest distributor of Depo Provera), Gates Foundation (major Depo Provera funder in developing world), ACOG (American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists an ardent proponent of Depo Provera), and researchers at USAID & Johns Hopkins who are still misleading vulnerable women by concealing the lethal side effects of Depo Proveraв??the most lethal Pfizer contraceptive in the world.
Kwame Fosuв??s relentless contraceptive advocacy, at a high personal cost, resulted in two major changes in 2015. 1) The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) changed the Depo Provera warning label to include breast cancer and list an experiment by preeminent cancer researcher Dr. Christopher Li that demonstrated a 110 percent risk of breast cancer with the use of Depo Provera. 2) In July 2015, the FDA using strong unequivocal language in a 14-page statement, mercilessly rejected ACOGв??s petition to remove Black Box warnings that limit Depo Proveraв??s use to only 2-years.
