Jean JaurГЁs (1859-1914) was among the most prominent socialists and proponents of peace in his generation. JaurГЁs ranks among the Leftв??s most incisive and creative thinkers: his republican critique of revolutionary socialism, his conception of the dialectic between ideals and reality, and his commitment to democratic values speak as much to our time as to his. Despite his prominence elsewhere, he has received little attention from the American Left. This panel will argue that JaurГЁs can help the contemporary U.S. Left think through our own efforts to build broad movements for social justice and to navigate the tense relationship between democracy and capitalism.
