Wendy Santamaria is a second year Political Science and Philosophy student with a minor in Writing for Civic Engagement at the University of California, Santa Barbara. She has spent the last two years researching the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), analyzing the methods used by ALEC to influence legislation behind the scenes and investigating ways to engage college students, millennials, and the following generations in dialogue about important public issues amid today’s noisy social media culture. Ranging from experimenting with ways to engage students with complex public issues, to determining what young people consider credible sources, her research uses ALEC as an example of a lack of awareness and dialogue of public issues. She will continue her studies into law school, focusing on constitutional law after graduating from the University of California, Santa Barbara.
